speak
publication, 2023
this work is an interpretive publication based off speak, an experimental magazine that ran from 1995 to 2001. the publication shares an excerpt from marshall mcluhan’s essay “the medium is the massage” which discusses how media and technology have impacted our society. throughout this work, the focus remains on the role communication plays in everyday life and the way it often becomes misunderstood. the main imagery throughout the publication is the phone and the idea of performance. the repetition of the phone images plays on the idea of allowing only the most basic part of communication to be seen - speaking and listening. meanwhile, the rest of the imagery allows the viewer to question the perspective through which society perceives communication. the images of the killer whale and “blue lady” are both examples of performance. the publication encourages the viewer to inspect the images closer, and focus on what could possibly be misunderstood. some meaning is present however, so much is left unsaid. all communication is performance.
