10 things i hate about you

"ten things i hate about you" is a classic romantic comedy and a rough adaptation of a shakespearean play that was released in the late 1990s. the grunge '90s aesthetic is a key characteristic throughout the movie, featuring scratchy typefaces, combat boots, and joan jett’s “bad reputation” opening the beginning of the movie. in an effort to emulate the overall grunge aesthetic present in the film, i experimented with various methods of creating posters from the '90s. i produced a version of the poster in illustrator inspired by the process of screen printing and immediately realized that the poster needed to be accurately screen printed.

for the final poster, i designed it in illustrator and used that design to create different parts of the screen-printed version. i then employed a screen with an iron-on stencil, screen printing silk, and the frame from an old canvas to produce the final physical poster. after allowing the poster to dry, i added texture by crumpling the paper and using a hammer on the corners. installed using large, flathead nails, the final poster embodied the true grunge aesthetic of the film.
